Used Semi Truck Financing: Down Payments, Terms & What Lenders Check
A used semi can save tens of thousands of dollars compared with new — but lenders take on more risk with older trucks, so the terms reflect it. Here's how used truck financing actually works.
Down Payment Expectations
Plan on a down payment. Used semis commonly require 10–25% down, and older trucks or weaker credit can push it higher. A larger down payment is the single best way to improve approval odds and lower your payment.
Age and Mileage
- Many lenders cap truck age around 10–12 years at the end of the term
- High mileage (often 700K+) may shorten the term or require more down
- Maintenance records and an inspection strengthen the file
Typical Terms
- Terms: up to 84 months on newer used trucks; older units usually get shorter terms
- Amount: up to $1M in total value across the units you finance
- Rates: higher than new-truck financing, driven by age and credit
- Seller: dealer purchases are usually simpler than private-party sales
What Lenders Check
- CDL and driving experience
- Credit and existing debt
- Bank statements and authority age (for owner-operators)
- Truck spec sheet, VIN, and condition

Equipment and truck programs fund up to $1M in total value with terms up to 84 months, as a loan or a lease. Rates, down payments, and final terms vary by lender, equipment, and credit profile, and every deal is subject to underwriting and approval. A down payment is required on most programs.
