SBA Working Capital Loans: How They Work and Who Qualifies

Most SBA attention goes to real estate and acquisitions, but working capital — payroll, inventory, marketing, covering a seasonal gap — is one of the most common reasons owners apply. Here's how the SBA handles it, and when a faster option makes more sense.

SBA Programs That Fund Working Capital

  • Standard 7(a): up to $5M, terms up to 10 years for working capital. Best for larger, planned needs.
  • SBA Express: up to $500K, with a faster lender decision. Can be a term loan or revolving line.
  • CAPLines: revolving lines tied to seasonal needs, contracts, builder projects, or receivables and inventory.

What It Takes to Qualify

  • Typically 2+ years in business with steady revenue
  • Business cash flow that covers the new payment (lenders often look for a debt-service coverage of about 1.15–1.25x)
  • Reasonable personal credit for owners with 20%+ ownership, who also personally guarantee the loan
  • Business and personal tax returns, financial statements, and a clear use of funds
  • Available collateral is pledged on larger loans, though lack of collateral alone shouldn't stop an otherwise strong deal

Pros and Cons

Pros: some of the lowest rates and longest terms available for working capital, which keeps payments low.

Cons: heavy paperwork and a timeline usually measured in weeks — see how long an SBA loan takes.

When You Need Cash Faster

If you're under two years in business, your credit is rebuilding, or you need funds this week, an SBA loan may not fit right now. Options like working capital loans, a business line of credit, or invoice factoring can fund in days. Some owners use short-term capital now and refinance into SBA later.

Figures reflect general SBA program guidelines and typical market practice. Requirements, rates, and timelines vary by lender and deal, and every loan is subject to underwriting and approval.
