Nonprofit Loans in California: Bridge Financing, Credit Lines & Facility Loans

Nonprofits are told to avoid debt, and for operating deficits that's good advice. But a well-structured loan can be the responsible choice when the money is already committed and simply hasn't arrived—or when owning a building costs less over time than renting one.

Bridge financing for grants and contracts

Government grants and service contracts are often paid on reimbursement. A bridge loan or credit line, sized against signed grant agreements or contracts, can cover payroll and program costs until reimbursements come in. Lenders look at the funder, the agreement terms, your history of getting reimbursed, and how quickly you've been paid in the past.

Lines of credit

A revolving line covers recurring timing gaps—a year-end giving season, a delayed contract renewal—and is paid down as funds arrive. Lenders usually want to see a few years of financial statements and steady revenue.

Facility and real estate loans

Buying or refinancing a building can stabilize occupancy costs and build equity. Lenders review the property, your revenue sources, cash reserves, and how a capital campaign or pledges fit the plan. See our commercial real estate loans.

Equipment and vehicles

Vans, kitchen equipment, medical equipment, and technology can be financed or leased, subject to lender review. See equipment financing.

What lenders look for in a nonprofit borrower

  • Diversified revenue—not one grant carrying the whole budget
  • Audited or reviewed financial statements and current Form 990s
  • Months of cash on hand and board approval to borrow
  • A clear source of repayment: the grant, contract, pledges, or operating surplus
