Semi Truck Financing With Bad Credit: Approval Requirements & How to Get Approved

A low credit score makes semi truck financing harder, but it doesn't rule you out. Many truck lenders start at a 550 FICO score. A lower score usually means you put more money down, not that you get turned away.

This guide covers what lenders check, how much down payment to plan for, and how to put your file together so it gets approved.

Can You Get Semi Truck Financing With Bad Credit?

Yes. Semi truck loans are backed by the truck itself. If you stop paying, the lender can take back an asset that holds its value. So truck lenders are more flexible on credit than banks making unsecured loans.

What changes with bad credit is the structure of the deal:

  • Higher down payment: usually 15–25% instead of 0–10%.
  • Higher rate: lower scores cost more to borrow.
  • Shorter term or newer truck: lenders may limit the age and mileage of the truck they'll finance.

What Lenders Look at Besides Your Credit Score

Down payment. This matters most. Cash in the deal lowers the lender's risk more than anything else.

CDL and driving experience. A valid Class A CDL is required. Two or more years of driving experience helps a lot, even if you're new to owning a truck.

Time with your authority. New MC authorities can get approved. Two or more years gets the best terms.

Bank statements and revenue. If you're already hauling, 3–6 months of business bank statements show steady income.

The truck. Lenders like a truck with a well-known brand, reasonable mileage and a fair price. A clean inspection helps.

What's on your credit report. A few old late payments matter less than recent repossessions, open collections or unpaid tax liens.

Typical Terms by Credit Range

These are general ranges only. Every lender and every deal is different.

  • 680+: 0–10% down, best rates, terms up to 72 months
  • 600–679: 10–15% down, moderate rates
  • 550–599: 15–25% down, higher rates, shorter terms
  • Below 550: possible with a large down payment, extra collateral or a strong co-signer

How to Improve Your Approval Odds

  • Save a bigger down payment. Even an extra 5% can change the answer.
  • Choose a truck that's 7 years old or newer, with mileage under about 700,000.
  • Pay down or settle open collections before you apply.
  • Have documents ready: CDL, bank statements, the truck spec sheet or invoice, and your authority details.
  • Line up freight. A signed lease-on agreement or steady broker loads shows you can make the payment.
  • Apply once through a broker who can shop your file, instead of letting multiple lenders pull your credit.

Watch Out For

Be careful with offers that guarantee approval no matter what, ask for big upfront fees before approval, or won't show you the total cost in writing. Before you sign, ask for the payment, the term, the total repayment amount and any balloon payment.
