California Cannabis Business Loan Requirements: What Lenders Actually Look For
Cannabis lenders don't publish a single standard, but the files that get funded look remarkably similar. This is the checklist they actually work from.
1. A License in Good Standing
Your California license from the Department of Cannabis Control must be active, with matching local permits. Lenders check. A pending renewal, an open enforcement action, or a license held by a different entity than the borrower can stall a file.
2. Time in Business
Most programs want at least 6 months of operating history. Equipment and real estate loans can sometimes work earlier because collateral carries more of the weight. Larger term loans usually want 2+ years.
3. Revenue Minimums
Working capital programs typically start around $10,000 a month in deposits. Larger loans scale with revenue. Lenders look at consistency as much as size: steady deposits beat one big month.
4. Credit Score
Credit matters less than most operators expect. Many revenue-based programs have no minimum FICO. Credit still affects pricing and the size of the offer, and it matters more on larger term and real estate loans.
5. Clean Banking
You need a business checking account that shows your revenue. Cash-heavy operators who deposit inconsistently look smaller on paper than they are. If you can, deposit regularly for a few months before applying.
6. Tax Compliance
Lenders check that excise and sales tax filings are current. Unpaid state tax balances are one of the most common reasons cannabis files get declined or reduced.
Documents Checklist
- State license and local permits
- 3–6 months of business bank statements
- Recent business tax returns or year-to-date financials
- Lease or deed for your premises
- Ownership breakdown and owner IDs
- Equipment quotes or purchase contracts, if applicable
What Gets Files Declined
- Licensing problems or ownership that doesn't match the license
- Unpaid state taxes or open liens
- Too many existing daily-payment advances
- Revenue that's dropping month over month without explanation
- Lease terms that end before the loan would
The Bottom Line
If your license is clean, your revenue shows up in the bank, and your taxes are current, you're ahead of most applicants. Send us your file and we'll tell you honestly where it stands.
